Geekly Weekly TV Rankings
( for new)(PS: There will be Spoilers)(PPS: I live tweet shows on twitter, but I try to keep those spoiler-lite for the important spoilers @AndrewGeczy)
(What does that mean? Important Spoilers? It means that things that seem like spoilers probably aren't important to your enjoyment of the episode. I'll either vaguely call out a moment, but maybe omit who perpetuated the moment, or who it was done to, or avoid the surrounding context, ensuring that you will still enjoy the story when you watch it.) (Meanwhile here I fully breakdown the happenings of an episode, and often even lean into the spoilers. I imagine you could still read for a show you don't watch, have your interest piqued, start the show from the beginning, and then once you get to the episode in question you'll have forgotten everything I'd spoiled)
  1. ➤ Into The Badlands *****I was amazed last week how many shows were instant 5 stars. This show is amazing, and it earns it's 5 stars. I love the characters on this show, none more than Tilda. Her scene today murdering that elderly woman was amazing. Bloody and beautiful. Also Nix is growing on me. I cannot stress enough how upset I am that this show is coming to an end. It deserves better. The fight choreography is just too good. The characters are too likable and bad ass. The fight scene this week between Nick Frost and the Black Widow was great. His crazy acrobatics. Obviously a stunt double, but it's hilarious to watch none the less.
  2. The Walking Dead ****1/2
Good episode of the show. Possibly the finale, I can't keep track of these things. All I know is that the Fear the Walking Dead trailer dropped, and I wasn't gonna watch it, but then I did watch it, and it was pretty exciting. It was a good trailer. But this ep was good too. I really Loved Lydia's plot in this, and I wish there was a little bit more between her and Carol. Enjoyed Negan scoring brownie points with Michonne. However Judith was a disappointment. Come on, she wouldn't run out there and not be able to get back. She wouldn't need Negan to carry her. What is this? Why does she have so much homework? I feel like whoever wrote this finale was perfectly fine in all respects except he's the guy who can't write kids, or just doesn't have a handle on Judith. Her most Judith-like moments were her yelling "Language" and that was stolen from other episodes. There was not a single creative thing done with her character this episode that didn't actively undermine her awesomeness. Not cool. In my version of this episode, she saves Negan. This might be why I'm not writing the show.
  3. ➤ Legends of Tomorrow ****1/2Good episode of the show, fun and zany just like the show always is. I really enjoyed Mona's role in this episode, and hope she continues being part of the team, though her twist at the end was... interesting. I liked the stress put on Sara and Ava's relationship, which is weird because before the break they had me rooting that the two never break up, and this episode, right from the start it seemed inevitable. Ava is just too by the book, and her morals are far from in the right place. I loved Zaria this episode, her combination of beauty and sarcasm continues to be endearing. It seems she might have a thing for Nate. She doth protest too much, weird since he's still getting over Vixen. Also poor Gary. Also it was nice seeing Ray wanna be Sara's official second in command I suppose, with a petition and everything leaving him in charge when she's off ship. And the lucha libre main plot, which really was more the B plot than Mona's plot, was enjoyable enough, especially how it worked with Mona's story. All in all a great episode.
  4. ➤ Family Guy ****Hilarious episode this week. Cleveland and Joe were turned to dust by Thanos. I wonder if that's gonna stick now until Avengers endgame happens. That would be pretty funny. It just begins "So, I herad Thanos has the mind gem now. That's all of them." "Wonder what that means." Lol. Stewie and Brian's plot was fun, but Quagmire and Lois's plot, while having good lines, was largely uninteresting.
  5. Supergirl ****
Good episode of Supergirl this week. Jonn's arc was a little muddled, and his delusions were quite insane, but the storyline with Supergirl and everyone coming to terms with Lex, and then Lex setting up Supergirl for the attack on the White House. It was all good stuff, and executed relatively well. You could feel the fear when angry evil Supergirl showed up. I appreciated some resolution to the feud between Lena and Supergirl, and now they can all be girlfriends together and help prove Supergirl's innocence.
  6. Saturday Night Live ***
A very average Saturday Night Live. Another episode that had great moments, but equally terrible moments in equal number. Sandra Oh was the very epitome of this, being a certain type of dramatic actress and straight woman, she was used to good and bad effect. I loved her as the british aristocrat in that digital sketch. That was silly. But her as the Korean interpreter felt racist even though she is Asian. Most of the other sketches just played it safe casting her as a business woman. The one where she was Tiki was amusing and one of the better sketches. A large problem I found with half the sketches this episode was that they were more like single punchlines. Like they'd make a great joke, or observation. But then that would drop within the first minute of the sketch and once you got what they were getting at, they'd have nowhere left to go. A couple skits just ended really short, and others (Like the korean translator in russia) just got really not funny trying to extend the sketch, and then ending suddenly and without any climax.
