Geekly Daily 16 (Tuesday, October 30): My internet is crapping out

Now Reading:  My novel for podcast

Yet again, I'm writing this while I am absolutely exhausted. It's been a big day, and thankfully the last time I'll have to wake up at 4 am. Never again. I've got a few days off before I start afternoon shifts, and frankly I just can't wait to get on nights. For one thing, I'm getting more and more behind on my podcasts. Usually I get through a lot of episodes at work, but that hasn't been happening while I've been focused on my training.

My internet has been tripping out the past couple days. Every once in a while, someone gets their internet activated, and the cable guy just goes into the box and fucks up a bunch of other people in getting his guy set up, and then my internet goes to shit and I have to call and get a service tech guy out to take a look. Pretty sure that's what this time is all about. Either that or my modem/router is dying. Fingers crossed that's not the issue. ANyway, I'm heading to bed. Good night my friends.

Geekly Weekly TV Rankings ( ➤ for new ):
  1. ➤ Legends of Tomorrow ****1/2
A good episode. Surprisingly not as funny as I was expecting. They made you think this seaosn would be all crazy and wacky, and then the villain of this episode is a fairy godmother which as a concept was very crazy and wacky. But then in reality they told a much more touching story about dealing with ignorance and prejudice, and the whole episode was rather serious a lot of the time, and not nearly as wacky as it was pretending to be. Is that a bad thing? No, I don't think so. It's nice to know this wacky show still has some serious things to say, and I look forward to the next episode.
  2. Arrow ****1/2
An episode focusing on Oliver in prison trying to get information about Diaz. I don't know what he expects to find in level 2, seems like an easy way for Brick to get rid of him without having to do anything. Now Oliver is out of his hair forever.

  3. Doctor Who ****1/2

Great episode this week, classic premise. Giant spiders running through the UK. Those giant spiders were detailed enough to creep the heck out of me, and I was screaming at the screen repeatedly. So the episode did a good job of engaging me. It was also fun meeting Yaz's family, but it's interesting when someone pointed a gun at her she didn't bother to mention she's a cop...
  4. Supergirl ****1/2

I enjoyed this episode. Maybe it was cause I was watching it just before work, because it was quite obvious what they are doing. Melissa Benoist is needed for the crossover episodes, she's probably featured in a major way, so they came up with a plot that grounded her for an episode, and now she has a suit covering her face so her stuntwoman can do all the work next week. Which means she has ALOT to do in the crossover. It was nice seeing Sam Witiker. You might remember him from Smallville and The Force Awakens video games. It was cool they put a familiar face in that role so that we could empathize with him, and understand what led him to become the evil bigoted person he's become. Fantastic episode. Also, the guy from Walking Dead as the father was good casting. Turns out you can even kill Grggory and he still keeps coming back. I'm adding half a star. This episode deserves it. That said, obviously generally I'd prefer episodes where the show focuses on the main characters I love, but for what it was, this episode did good.
  5. Star Wars Resistance ****
This is the first episode of Star Wars Resistance that I can actually admit I enjoyed. It was fun, I got behind the story. I enjoyed the characters. I was engaged with the story of finding out about what the FIrst Order wanted, and what the New Republic was into. I actually engaged with this episode, which is more than I can say about every other episode of this show so far.
  6. Ducktales ****
A fine episode of Ducktales, focusing on a plot that I couldn't care too much about. The under water mutant crill was kind of gross. The best part of the story, in the end, was one that happened off screen with Launchpad where he returns at the end of the episode saying "I was lured into the sea where I did... sea stuff." Hilarious
  7.  The Walking Dead ***

This episode kinda bored me this week, despite it's focus on Machonne. I've read elsewhere that people have been enjoying this season. Which is funny cause this is the first season that has been boring me. Until now I've been totally in on this show, but this season has been really meh. We'll see how it goes. The ending was intense. Rick is pretty fucked.
  8. The Last Ship ***
It was an alright episode, but very cable TV. Also I don't know why last week I thought it was the finale this week. There's still two more episodes, which is good because this episode reminded me more than any other how much like 24 all this is. It wasn't bad though, it was tense, people died, including a main character. Master chief didn't get shot for once. And of course Tom Chandler had to be a hero at the end. It was decent.
  9. ➤ Charmed *
I didn't even make it through the episode. I got to about 5 minutes in, when the youngest one was waiting tables, and this guy was complaining because they didn't have chicken, and then this dude came by, with the worst dialogue and acting ever, but the way he was saying everything let me know, this dude was a dude. And I was just like "Out." I don't care. I only like the one sister, and if the writing isn't even going to try, I'm out. I have better uses of my time. Maybe I'm in a mood, but now I still have Arrow and Legends of TOmorrow to watch, lets see if they rub me the same way. :p

Geekly Daily 15 (Monday, October 29): Good night!

Now playing: Pokemon Yellow
Now Watching: My DVR

Now Reading: Training for my job

My job training is going well. This night shift work at a gas station looks like it'll be chill, and low stress which is all I'm looking for. I've been playing a bunch of video games, I apologize for everyone who wants me to release an audiobook podcast, I will do so tomorrow. I promise.

I feel like I should be talking about something useful in this section, but I can never think of anything useful to talk about, usually because I'm always trying to fill this section just before I pass out, and I'm just tired as hell. Tomorrow, I'm gonna try to quit smoking again. It'll be my last time waking up at 4am, after that I'm on afternoons for a week then nights finally again. SO I just gotta get through this morning, and I'll be good. Good night everyone!

Geekly Daily 14 (Sunday, October 28): Finally watched 3x01 of Daredevil

Now playing: Star Wars Battlefront 2
Now Watching: My DVR

Now Listening: Kinda Funny Podcasts

Now Reading: Action Comics 21

I forgot the very last thing I watched making it onto the blog yesterday. Ah well. It was Znation. It was good. Not great but okay. That last weeks ratings was a mess cause I'd gotten so far behind. Here's hoping that doesn't happen again. It's about time I got on top of my life. Life is for the living and I wanna live it!

These daily blogs get more views than my video game content, which I gotta say feels pretty great. My blogs routinely get 15-20 views each, and it's so steady, and yet no one ever says anything. It makes me feel like it's people accidentally clicking the link and immediately regretting it. But if that were true, then one would assume my video game content, auto posted here, would see the same steady numbers. The fact they get lower, means there must be people deliberately coming back to see what I have to say about Pop Culture, people more interested in my TV rankings than in seeing me blow up tie fighters in an Xwing. And that really reassuring. Nothing is more disturbing to me than that I have more twitch players than Patreon readers. (Cue Leonard "Bones" McCoy voice) I'm a writer! Not a game streamer.

That said I'll take support anywhere I can find it. But it's nice to know people are interested in what I have to say, even though what I have to say is usually "Life sucks! I'm super busy!" but I'll try to find other things to talk about.

I've been playing a lot of Starfighter Assault in Battlefront 2, which has been celebrating a double XP weekend. A double XP weekend that pretty much means everyone playing starfighter assault against me has max star cards. This is worse than the pay to win! And some of these try-hards really are overpowered and unkillable. It's crazy the level of skill and ability I've seen in the game today.

I still need to play more spiderman, and read more of my novel for the podcast, but my internet kept disconnecting yesterday, and I haven't given it a chance yet today. Just taken it easy. Maybe tomorrow for the podcast. After my work, I work early in the morning. Maybe tuesday. If not monday then tuesday. And then a chapter after that maybe friday? We'll see.

I decided to take it easy tonight. Finally watched the first episode of Daredevil. It was fun. Makes me sad that they cancelled Iron Fist and Luke Cage. They had a thing going on there, and they just destroyed it. People keep saying their hoping for daughter of the dragon, or heroes for hire. But I'm not so sure, there's rumbling this all has to do with low social media engagement. This is really messy. And this is like the first dark period for Marvel since they started with Iron Man forever ago.

Geekly Weekly 8 (Saturday, October 27): ROugh Week, thank god it's through

Now playing: Pokemon Yellow
Now Watching: My DVR
Now Listening: Kinda Funny Podcast
Now Reading: Old Adventure comics from 1930

It's been a big week, what with me changing jobs, releasing a new chapter on my Patreon, dealing with exterminators, going from nights to days and my body protesting in every concievable way. I'm broke as crap, and not sure how I'm gonna make my payments this month, what with my pay days being as far apart as possible between jobs, unluckily enough.

My DVR gave me a really hard time to keep up with this week, but I'm hoping next week I'll have an easier time. My biggest folly is having to finish my writing each month with a long ass writing binge, where I put everything else in my life on hold, and then rebuilding my life after is always hell. I want to just figure out how to write slowly over a month, but it's so much easier to get a momentum going and barrel through it in one go. We'll see how this next month goes. I've chosen an easy chapter to write, so everything is on my side. I'm finally gonna get my life in order and no longer need to keep playing catch up.

Now I'm caught up, I've been playing video games again for the first time in weeks. Battlefront 2 has been a lot of fun, and even attracted a comment. I tried to play some Spider-man too, but my twitch kept disconnecting, so I'll try again tomorrow. I swear there will be an audio book chapter soon.

Geekly Weekly TV Rankings ( ➤ for new ):
  1. Legends of Tomorrow *****
Great episode. The unicorn was hilarious, Constantine was great, the legends all had their moments of awesome. It was fun being at Woodstock, it was cool seeing Sara and the other woman having a relationship that's working despite Constantine's warnings. I hope that continues. I think they can do it, and I think this could be a great episode. Man that unicorn was hilarious.
  2. The Flash *****
If you've been paying attention to the blog, you probably have already realized I'm a superhero freak. So does this deserve to be ahead of SHameless? Maybe not. But I love it. THe new Wells was hilarious and awesome. Nora is adorable and I really love having her around on the team. I love her relationship with her parents, and I love that they still feel parental with her though they haven't had her yet. I was worried about Cisco, the stakes were high. I liked that they tried to solve their serious issue in a goofy way with Wells. Great episode. Thrills, chills, humour and heart. What more do you need?
  3. Shameless *****
Another great episode of Shameless. Poor Fiona, she's really spiraling. But damn is it fun to watch. I didn't realize that last episode was Ian's last, or else I might have teared up more at the sad good bye, and Mickey coming in. What a way to end his storyline. I also loved what they did to Ford, that was hilarious. I dunno if that girl is right for Lip, but I liked her making fun of him. And yet he didn't hold any grudges. I think I need to learn from him. How to be truly shameless. I loved his little skip walking away. And Carl is going steady with his new girlfriend. Great episode.Lol Kevin pretending to be a murderer that killed himself and Vee.
  4. American Horror Story *****
A great episode this week of American Horror Story. I love that most of this season is a sequel to Coven, and every time they play the "la la lala lala" I get a little giddy. There were some great scenes in this, it was nice seeing the Coven turn everything around. It makes you wonder why Michael was so confident in the future when they are doing so good at things in the past. Whats going to go horribly wrong? It's nice spending time with all the witches again. And it was even nice to see the down syndrome girl with the voodoo king guy. Great episode. John Henry is back, he's cool. Loved it all around.
  5. The Goldbergs ep 4 ****1/2

Great episode. I laughed so hard this week. Every plotline was fun, it was great seeing principal Flutie from Buffy as Jeff's Dad. I like how Beverly's friends try so hard to be normal, but being close to Beverly just makes them weird by proxy. They can't help it. When they were all scheming in a huddle, and the gym teacher catches them, one of them just backs away like "I'm normal!" So good. But the best was the Rollercoaster. I don't know why they kept passing out like that, I've never heard of someone passing out on a rollercoaster like that before, but god was it random and hilarious. Them waking up seperately being like "Where am I?" "WHat was I angry about? Oh my god." and out. So ridiculous, I lost it for way too long.
  6. Z-Nation ****1/2
This rating might be higher than it deserves, but I was really not in the mood at this point. After zoning out on Walking dead I was sure that Z-Nation wouldn't fair much better, being watched late in my never ending attempt to clear my DVR. But this episode was intense. And they killed a beloved character at the end, taking the show in an unexpected direction, as it likes to do. I enjoyed it, and I def perked up when shit hit the fan there at the end. It's a shame. Seems TK and Red can never be happy together.
  7. Arrow ****

Great episode of Arrow this week. Not perfect, but great nonetheless. I enjoyed watching Oliver figure out how to get rid of the shitty guard without killing him. I enjoyed watching Diggle throw his men into harms way to die so he could get away. God I hope he starts hiring vigilantes as Argus soldiers, because obviously men with guns don't do the trick. Finally I really enjoyed the two Canaries working together. And I enjoyed the long bow hunters, especially that one that blocks noise. It was a fun episode, and kept me engaged. What more can I ask? Also, when there were three on the train, but the Canaries were fighting one, I knew the third on the train was Diaz. Great set up. Also Felicity's storyline was great. Though I'd rather see her working with the Canary's than FBI lady.
  8. Ducktales ****
That was a great episode of Ducktales. A lot of fun, it really pushed to try and differentiate more between the brothers, and I really appreciated it. There were a bunch of really funny moments that had me laughing, and frankly it's just great to have Ducktales back on the air again. I just hope we get more Lena. A couple points I thought the show would involve her, but nothing. Is she done? Lets hope not. Also, it's too bad Don Cheadle doesn't still voice Donald Duck.
  9. Doctor Who ****
That was a really good episode of Doctor Who. Not perfect, there was still some wonkiness, but I loved Rosa Parks, and I had a big smile on my face the whole time I was watching that episode. I didn't like the song they played during the big moment, and then they made it worse when they played the song again over the credits. But I liked when the doctor revealed Rose Parks would struggle until she got recognition by Clinton in 1999. Just thinking about how hard her life was brought a tear to my eye. She deserved better. She was awesome, and it was a good episode.
  10. The Good Place ep 5 ****
Great episode this week. Best episode this season in fact. Finally the characters are caught up, and the way they all reacted to the story of everything they'd gone through was very unique to each of them. Chidi was the best though. He just broke. The Grocery Store was hilarious, but nothing was funnier than him making chili in front of his class, and they were just looking at him like WTF.
  11. Supergirl ****
It was a good episode of Supergirl this week. I like how it seems to be this season Supergirl has to fight Anger, Fear, and Bigotry. And conservatives. it's been really interesting. It's a little heavy handed, but I prefer it to the kind of morality lessons we were getting in season 1. I think this might end up being Supergirl's best season yet, and that's not the first DC show I've said that for so far this season.
  12. The Good Place ep 6 ****

This was a good, funny episode of the show, but we still don't really know where we're going, we just know SImone probably wont be coming with us, which is too bad cause she was awesome. Like the two sitcoms below this one, it was funny, and scratched the sitcom itch, but it did little in the story telling department. So if you just want another show to make you laugh, this show still brings it. I love the ongoing joke that Eleanor is Bi. Seeing that turn where she falls for SImone in the virtual reality was hilarious.
  13. The Big Bang Theory ****

It was a perfectly funny show, with Howard dressing up as Sheldon being the instant highlight. I feel like the most obvious tell that they were laughing at him and not with him was that he didn't even get the joke till the end. Which was also the funniest part. At first I thought they were going to have him get introspective and realize some of his faults. INstead Amy attacked Bernadette. I was proud of her for standing her ground, and I liked Amy's come back, but I liked even more how bad Sheldon was at being Howard. When Bernadette got really upset I was worried they were gonna be like "See, AMy was right." I'm glad there was no big apology to Amy scene, but instead was Bernadette and Sheldon coming to understand that they'd both been bullied as kids and could relate to one another. That said, this in the middle place they ended up felt a little flat. Like no one grew and nothing changed, and the show continues on. A perfect fine regular episode of this show, in a season that's winding down to the finale.
  14. The GoldBergs ****
Like The Big Bang Theory Above, this was a perfectly fine. Hilarious, poignant, taking a somewhat subdued realist moral that didn't land home as well as more traditional ones, but perhaps worked better than just another cliche. Maybe it's just all the watching I've done over the past while, but all these shows are running together.
  15. The Last Ship ****
This was another intense episode of The Last Ship. If you're watching this for all the right reasons, they've made this final season suitably action packed, which seems to be all they are trying to accomplish. They haven't bothered with emotional side stories, or setting up character arcs. The last to episodes have pushed the action, and now their command center is under attack! Is the next episode the series finale?
  16. ➤Titans***1/2

It was a good episode. The flashbacks through it off a little. Seemed a little pointless, and all the scenes with Bruce Wayne wwere downright laughable. "I have an important thing to tell you about avenging your parents, but I'm gonna do it in a note, and then just watch you silently from the hall." And there were like 4 or 5 scenes like that, of him just silently watching Dick. But never actually talking to him? I think they should maybe find Dick a more suitable adoptive home. Other than those flashbacks though, good episode. Koriand'r is amazing. I wasn't sure about her being black. Not that she was being portrayed by a black actress, I think that didn't matter. I just wanted her to have orange skin like the comics. But, when she uses her powers and her skin turns orange, it looks amazing. And she does a good job of the role even when she isn't orange, but man I wish she could be orange all the time.
  17. Family Guy ep 4 ***1/2
Great episode, again, best episode of the season so far. That said, the microverse cared the crap out of me, as I have a phobia for that kinda stuff. Like really bad. SO that was rough, but I laughed a lot and had a great time. We need more eps like this...but not literally about shrinking yourself. Again, Phobia.
  18. Charmed ***1/2
This wasn't a bad episode. I enjoyed it. I liked that they called their assistant
Meghan Markle. Hilarious. I enjoyed trying to figure out who to trust, though I trusted the british guy the whole time, I didn't trust their mom coming back. I thought that was never gonna happen, and he's just too damned charismatic. But It was smart of them to do that story in episode 2 before I fell in love with him. Good episode. Still not great. But fine.
  19. Black Lightning Ep 3 ***1/2

It kept me engaged, so there's at least that going for it. I still like the kids a lot more than Black Lightning, but thankfully this episode's focus was really on the daughters, with only minor C and D plots for "Mommy" and "Daddy". I'm still at least as upset about that one bad girl's death as Tobias. Also the scene where they apprehended him was very out of nowhere.
  20. Family Guy ep 3 ***1/2

It was a funny episode of Family Guy. Robbins was funny. Stewie's new friend was cool. Though I don't remember evil Stewie being involved in forever, and suddenly he wants to kill his mother again. It's a random episode, playing off of mostly throw away gags for it's humour. Also, Lois being a drunk was hilarious.
  21. Black Lightning Ep 2 ***1/2
This episode of Black Lightning wasn't bad, even though it bored the crap out of me. Part of the problem, I think, is that I've been watching so much TV today (Doesn't seem like much here? I finally finished all the daily talk shows, which was half of it). Despite being bored, there were parts of this episode I really enjoyed. I like thunder a lot, though I didn't even recognize her when she got done up and started dating that singer. I was like "Who is this black woman in make up?" she looks so different done up.and those scenes were so disconnected from everything else in the episode, so there was never anything to tell me "Hey this girl is this girl" Then the other sister has had some good scenes. And the new kid at the dinner table, that scene wasn't as bad as it could have been if people continue to not cue in. And I like when the younger daughter took the kid to the roof. Like "Yeah, I know you got weird powers that effect me, but I dig you're an outcast and I wanna help. Good stuff.
  22. The Walking Dead ***
I can't say much about this episode. I stopped paying attention. I started swiping on Tinder, next thing I know, I'm swiping on 4 different dating apps till they are out of options, not that It'll matter because no one every matches with me. I should have focused on the episode. It seemed good. Something about garbage lady and a helicopter taking people away? Crazy. And then in a different plot there was that one girl and the saviours, and the other girl killed her and maggie walked away or something. And now they're going to side with Neagen? Fuck. This is what happens when I let my DVR get this far behind. Ugh, no time to go back, just keep barreling forward.
  23. Charmed(Ep1) **

It was nice to see the girl from Tomorrow People and Into the Badlands doing something cool. And she gets to be the bad ass for once. When before she was the love interest without fighting skills or powers, now she gets to kick all the ass. So that's cool. The other two girls are alright too. I could frankly not care less about everything else in the show. Especially the effect of that bad guy, as he was dying at the end, was absurd.
  24. The Gifted **
Man, that was a lame episode of this show. It's such a bore, and that whole storyline with the hacker was so forced. The writing is so lame, and it sucks, cause I don't mind the cast, and they really seem to be trying, but they always have nothing to work with. Snore.
  25. Star Wars Resistance **
Just watched episode 2. I have to admit, I was gonna give it 1 star, and then the air battle happened with the pirate attack, and that was alright. But the show is pretty awful. Oh and then they introduced Phasma at the end, like that was supposed to hide how awful the show was. It didn't. Still the space combat was good. The best thing I can say about the game is that it made me want to play Star Wars Battlefront 2 Starfighter Assault.

  26. Star Wars Resistance *
This show has been terrible so far. I'm not connecting to anything, I don't even know really much of what happened in this episode. He made friends I guess, but they were... selfish? but still good friends or something? I dunno, it was a terrible episode of a terrible show.

Previously on Adrift Homeless:
Rommeria is a dying desert world, in a one planet solar system surrounded by a nebula. The nation of Hymalious City has formed a conglomerate with the other nations of their planet to build a massive colony ship to the stars, known as project Rebirth. Only one nation opposes them, and that’s the nation of Blazkor, a terrorist nation lead by the ruthless tyrant Suma Davi’s. Her father was a war criminal for genetic experiments he conducted on innocent people. The experiments included genetic modification to force compliance amongst the people of Blazkor.

General Ed Gilber leads the project Rebirth, and he’s found a civilian first officer in Doctor David Stanfield, roommate to the recently recruited Emma Penman, newly appointed Chief Engineer of the project, a position previously held by her mother. It was upon recruiting the doctor, and helping science whiz Kathrine Pross seek a rare unknown element in the deep desert, that war broke out between Hymalious City forces and the Blazkor Nation. There were many losses on both sides, but Hymalious City was victorious, defeating Suma Davi’s’ army, and grounding an ancient alien space cruiser before the terrorists could crash it into the center of Hymalious City.

“Missus Mayor,” General Gilber said as Maggie May opened the door to her office. Of course he’d be waiting for her. “Yer assistant thought I could talk some sense into ye about addressing yer people.”

“I think you mean our people, General,” Maggie May reminded him sternly. She supposed he had a point though, and she was still feeling a bit tipsy from the three glasses of whiskey she’d had. Or had it been four. “But you can tell my assistant that I am ready to address the media. Prepare a podium on the front steps of Prime Central Station. I’ll address the people directly.”

“That’s amazing news,” Councilor Mombatta said enthusiastically, the large black man getting up from where he’d been sitting in the waiting room. Was the whole council there waiting on her? “People are frightened, Madam Mayor.”

“We’re all afraid, Councilor Mombatta,” she told him. “Maybe that’s precisely what the people need to hear.”

“I did as you asked,” Tameka said, following the mayor out of her office, carrying an opaque flask. “I really don’t think you need it though.”

“Trust me,” Maggie May said, taking the flask from her and sipping from it. She’d have to make it last a whole speech. “I need it.”

“Who in the nebulous hells is this?” Gilber said, lighting a cigar. It seemed to be a rhetorical question as he then quickly added, “I don’t think it very wise to be alone in your office with the daughter of a terrorist leader without any security.”

“I vouch for her,” Maggie May told him. “In fact, I’ll be swearing her and her friend in tonight.” She’d already made her mind up about that hours ago. “They’ve done more than enough to help us for us to know we can trust them.” Gilber seemed about to protest, but she didn’t give him the chance, walking with him and Tameka as Councilor Mombatta ran off to tell her assistant of her press conference plans.

“Speaking of tonight,” she said to the General, “What of David?”

“John tells me he accepts,” Gilber told her gruffly, puffing away at his cigar.

“Excellent,” Maggie May told him. “Then tonight can go ahead as planned.”

She took a swig of her drink as they crossed through the doors between the executive wing and the rest of Prime Central Station. As soon as she was through the door, reporters were on top of her with cameras in her face, flash bulbs going off left and right.

“Misses Mayor!” One reporter yelled. “What can you tell us about the object in the sky over Hymalious City?”

“Misses Mayor!” Another reporter yelled. “Have we been visited by aliens?”

“Misses Mayor!” a third reporter yelled. “How close did the crashed ship twelve kilometers from our city borders get to causing a major catastrophe.” There were many other questions yelled out at her, but most of them were lost to the noise.

“I believe you answered your own question with that one,” She responded to the last reporter she could comprehend. “About twelve kilometers.” She raised her arms to address everyone. “Please people, I will answer all of your questions with a prepared statement, if you would all follow me outside.”

They got to the doors of the station, where Maggie May’s assistant had hurried to meet them.

“They’re just fetching your podium now, Ma’am,” Becca said in a state of panic. It often amused the mayor, making Becca’s life a living hell. “I thought you were going to make a statement from your office. I’m so sorry, it’ll be brought right out to you.”

“It’s quite alright,” Maggie May told her, and she handed the mayor a microphone.

“It’s hooked up to all the speakers in and outside the station.”

Maggie May took the microphone and stepped through the doors onto the steps where, outside stretching out from the station, thousands of people had gathered waiting for a statement. Usually her face would be broadcast on the side of the large pyramid like structure, but this wasn’t a normal day.

She realized she was standing out there alone, and looked back at Gilber, Tameka, and Becca. Becca shook her head violently, and Gilber gave a far more subtle shake of his head, but Tameka just shrugged and stepped forward. Councilor Mombatta, just joining them, stepped past them to join her and together they stepped outside.

Maggie May stubbornly waited, throwing the General a raise of her eyebrow. Finally, reluctantly, he stepped out, pushing her assistant out with him. Strength in numbers.

The mayor took a swig of her drink.

“Hello,” Maggie May said into her microphone, and the speakers blew out, emitting a large high pitched squeak. Everyone winced, and Maggie May quickly covered her hand over the mic, looking to Becca. Her assistant was furiously tapping at her tablet to wirelessly control the levels.

“Well that works,” Maggie May said into her microphone, and this time it came out at a more reasonable volume, booming out to the people gathered before her. The reporters had taken to the front of their crowd, all recording devices pointed towards her, everyone waiting in silence to hear what she had to say.

“I know what you all want from me,” the mayor said reservedly. “You want me to come out here and give you a short and quick uplifting speech telling you everything will be okay so that you can all move along with your day.” She paused, letting the silence hang over the crowd. “I’m not going to do that.” Another pause. “Chalk it up to age, but what I have to say is going to take some time to say it.” She paused again, this time wondering if what she’d just said had made sense.

Taking a swig of her flask, she continued. “Have you all heard about the Hymalious desert turtle?” she asked, and a number of people nodded. “You have?” she asked. “Of course you all have. Wait. That guy says he hasn’t.” she pointed to no one in particular in the crowd. “So I’m going to tell you about them, for that guys sake, and if you already know everything I’m about to say you can blame that guy for wasting your time.”

There were chuckles throughout the crowd.

“The Hymalious Desert Turtle didn’t used to be a desert turtle at all,” she told the crowd. “When it evolved on this planet, there were trees and rivers and vegetation. This world was a paradise. As our ancestors describe it.”

“They say,” she explained, “that the Desert Turtle could live a thousand years. That meant that there were turtles still alive that could remember the world before as it was. But last year there were only a few left, kept safe in captivity at our zoo. They weren’t mating anymore, you see. They had come to realize the world wasn’t habitable for them anymore. They knew that this was the end of times, and they didn’t want to bring up children in a world that couldn’t sustain them.”

“Just this month, the last turtle died in our wildlife preserve, and now another in an extremely long list of unique lifeforms that used to inhabit this planet has gone extinct.” She let another prolonged silence hang over the crowd. “They knew this was the end of the world. As we know, and it’s time we stop living in denial.”

“Yes,” she said, as her assistant’s assistant brought her podium out onto the steps and set it in front of her. “Thank you,” she told the man, leaning on the podium. “That’s better. It’s hard to stand and talk at the same time when you get to be my age.” She gave the crowd a meek smile as they seemed desperate for her to go on. “Where was I now? Yes. Yes, the object in orbit over our planet is indeed one of our making. It’s called Project Rebirth. Or perhaps just The Rebirth, once completed.”

The reporters at the front of the crowd jumped into another frenzy, screaming out questions as their cameras furiously flashed away. She ignored them.

“Like the Desert Turtle, we have the intelligence and understanding to know the fate that has befallen the planet,” she yelled out through her mic into the crowd, booming over the screaming reporters. “But unlike the desert turtle, we have the drive and ingenuity to do something about it.”

“We are building a massive colony ship, capable of supporting, we’re hoping sustainably, approximately two hundred thousand people. They will have the opportunity at life far more comfortable than what we have been living here. With unlimited water, and fresh fruits and produce. There will be an entire commercial district where people will be able to hold down jobs. There will be an entire working economy and ecosystem within this ship, as if it were a city in space.”

“This will be the chance at a better life for two hundred thousand residents of Rommeria. Selected not just from Hymalious City, but cities all across the globe. This has been a joint effort with all nations. Cortta Angail,” she looked to Mombatta, and he straightened his posture as the camera turned to him. “Occantay, as well as every other nation on this planet except for, of course Blazkor. The threat from which I can assure you has been affirmatively taken care of.”

Again the reporters yelled out questions, and again she ignored them.

“The Rebirth will not leave the nebula and then forget about the rest of us,” she continued to say, “And yes I fully intend to stay behind.” Everyone around her looked at her with surprise, no one expecting that of her. But it was something else she’d decided on for some time. “The mission of the joint military and civilian crew will be to seek out a new home, capable of supporting us. Upon finding that home, they will drop off all but a skeleton crew, and then return to Rommeria to facilitate the transport of the rest of us.”

“Our times are dark,” she summarized, stepping around the podium and sitting on the steps of the station. “Perhaps the darkest they’ve ever been. But there is hope. We have spent decades now building hope where there was nothing. The solar gods won’t save us. Teamwork and co-operation between all our nations and peoples will. Stay strong, Rommeria. And conserve that strength, because you will need it in the long years ahead.”

She placed the microphone down on the steps of the station, getting up and storming past Gilber back into the lobby. Behind her she could still hear the reporters screaming out questions, but behind them she could hear a spattering of applause.

She drained the rest of her flask.

“Hey!” one of the cooks in the cafeteria kitchen complained, as Emma squeezed through to fiddle with something under their sink. “I was using that!”

“I’ll just be a minute,” Emma told him, quickly coming up with an excuse in her head. “I have to check the pressure on the water filtration system.”

“Do you have to do that now?” the cook complained, his large chef’s hat tilting untidily on his head.

“There’s been a recurring issue,” she told him. “You should see what happened on Deck twelve.”

He frowned at her. “What happened on deck twelve?”

“Let’s just say,” she said, knowing she had him around her finger. “you don’t want your pressure to reverse and start showering your kitchen with human waste.”

The cook nodded furiously. “Please, continue.”

“I thought so,” Emma said, unhooking the specialized filtration system her mother designed from the sink, and scanning the barcode she found on its underside.

23 of 23 scanned. Would you like to play video file now?

It was a video file! She hid her comm device back in her pocket, and reattached the filter to the sink.

“Aaaand the water’s back on,” Emma told the man. “Looks like you’re good to go.”

“Thank you,” the man said to her. “Thank you so much. Please, let me at least make you a sandwich.”

“That’s okay,” Emma told him. “There’s really no need to thank me.” Well that much was true. “I was only doing my job.”

“Please,” the man said. “I insist. I was making this BLT for myself, but you deserve it more. I can always make myself another.” He handed her the sandwich.

“Wow,” she said, realizing she hadn’t eaten yet that day and was in fact quite hungry, “thanks chef!”

She took the sandwich and stepped out of the kitchen into the cafeteria proper. It was empty, as people were preparing for the ceremony that night. It meant she could view her video file in peace, and enjoy her sandwich. She took a bite. It was good. The bread was a little dry.

The doors to the cafeteria opened, and David stepped in with Sara.

“And this is the cafeteria,” she told him, apparently still giving him the tour. “this is where military personnel eat, though for the time being all civilian personnel on board have been doing most of their eating here as well. At least until more of the ship gets opened up for civilian access.”

“Emma!” David said, spotting her. “Are you okay?” She wondered if he could tell just by looking at her the kind of day she’d been having.

“I’m fine,” she lied, hiding her phone away again. “I was just checking the pressure on the water filtration system.” The lie was so good, it worked even better the second time. “Poop showering everywhere. It could have been a bad time.”

“But you fixed it?” Sara asked, with seeming real concern. Emma gave her a nod.

“That’s my Emma,” David said with a smile that calmed her nerves. He still had faith in her, even if the morons downstairs didn’t.

“I’m going to leave you to your tour,” Emma told them. “I don’t want to get in the way.”

“That’s okay!” David insisted. “We were just about done.”

“Most of the ship is still closed for construction,” Sara explained.

“Seriously,” Emma told them. “I have work to do. But you guys have fun.”

“Keep fighting those poop showers,” David called after her as she left the cafeteria.

She quickly made her way to the elevators, and took them up to the residential decks. She took refuge inside David’s quarters, hers still not quite feeling like home, and she sat down on his couch to finally activate the video on her communicator.

Her mother’s face filled her screen. Her heart leapt into her throat, and she almost chocked. “Emily,” her mother said her name, and Emma started to cry. Her mother looked older, and so much more weary than she ever remembered her. “So you solved my bread crumb trail.”

“Yeah mom,” Emma said through her tears, though she knew her mother couldn’t hear her. “I did.” She curled up into a ball and fought back a sniffle as her mother continued.

“I knew only you could. Only you would be able to recognize which parts on this massive ship contained my unique style.” Her mother frowned, and it almost looked like she would start crying as well. “Of course if you’re watching this video, that means Maggie went against my wishes and brought you on board the project to replace me.” Her mother broke, a tear rolling down her cheek. “Which of course she would, because I raised you to be as good as me, if not better. It figures you’d be their only hope.”

“I want you to know I love you Emily,” her mother said between sobs. They even cried the same. “An’ that makes what I have to say next all the harder.” Her mother tried to compose herself. It seemed she was at a work station, probably the same desk where she’d designed all the parts Emma had spent the day hunting for. “I don’t want you to blame Maggie May or anyone at the project for tearing our family apart.”

Her mother nodded, as if trying to convince herself she needed to finish. “I chose this path for us. I chose to be a part of something that was bigger than us. It was the hardest decision I ever made in my life, but you have to understand I did it for you. You and your brother. I had to offer you guys a chance at a better life, and this was the only way I knew how.”

Someone yelled to her from off screen. She nodded at them, and coughed into a handkerchief. “I don’t have much time left,” Emma didn’t know if she meant for the video, or if she knew she was getting sick. Emma straightened up on the couch. “I’m sure the men aren’t being all that welcoming to you. I’m sure they likely blame you for all my mistakes. And I’m sorry, I’ve made many.”

Her mother sniffled, blowing her nose into the handkerchief she still held in her hand. “Don’t let them bully you around. You know what needs to be done. You know how to fix the power crisis. I have faith in you. I believe in you. Solar gods, Emily, I love you so faking much.” She seemed like she was going to cry again, but Emma’s mother closed her eyes and mentally composed hersel.

“I have to go now,” she said.

“No,” Emma begged the screen. “Don’t go, please don’t go. I miss you so fucking much.”

“I miss you, Emily.”

“I miss you too, Mommy.” It was like she was a little girl again. Thirteen on the street, scared her brother wasn’t going to make it through the night. “Mommy. I love you please don’t go.” Emma coughed on the snot running down her nose, but she didn’t care.

“Look after your brother,” her mother said. “He’s going to need you more than you need me.”

“It’s not true,” Emily pleaded. “It’s not true.”

Her mother reached across the screen and hit a button. The video went black.

Emma cried.

And cried.

Would you like to replay the video?

Emma hit yes.

“Emily.”

Emma cried.
