Runaways is one of my favourite comics of all time. Up there with Scott Pilgrim and Powers. SO I was destined to like this show, no matter how bad it was. Season 1 wasn't bad, however it wasn't great. It did a decent job of introducing the characters I love, but season Two is what really took those characters through adventures that far more closely resembled the comic than last year.

My favourite character has always been Nico, and she's so amazing in the show. The actress plays exactly the kind of person I envisioned when reading the comics. As does Gert, as does Karolina. The way she looks when the latter is glowing and flying is so dead on. All the actors do a great job of portraying their characters, the parents too. I've heard complaints there's too much of a focus on the parents, but the reality is, the show does the parents so well, it only benefits by building a stronger story to surround them and keeping them around long past where the comic discarded them. Casting is probably their shows greatest strength.

This season also, as previously reported, sticks much closer to the comic this year than previously, changes to the parents story arc not withstanding, and it's often when it deviates its characters largely from the comics is when it feels at it's weakness, again, not inlcuding the parents who only benefit from every deviation, and every increased importance. Topher not being a vampire though, very disappointing. Maybe it would have been from left field, but the alternative they came up with felt very tacked on and hastily made up as they went. Xavin not being a Skrull feels similarly disappointing and hurriedly waved over. Molly being older kinda sucks, and will only get worse every year. But that last change is one we kind of have to accept and move on, and she doesn't do a bad job, she just isn't the molly we know in the comics, and never will be. Perhaps when the show most embraces that fact is when her character works best.

I've heard a lot of good press for Nico and Karolina's relationship, and it is beautiful, and heart warming, and adorable. IN the finale, when Nico's brain is being scrambled and all she can tell Karolina is "I lamp you." Uh. This show is so good.Gert and CHase was also an strong focus, and it was fun watching both these teenage relationships burn bright and then quickly fade away, as teenage relationships often do. Watching how quickly the perfect romances between them fell apart was fun, if a little depressing. But is also very true to the comics. As much as these characters love to pair off and bump teenage uglies, they also are all terrible at making their pairings last, so I'm excited to see where we go from here in season 3. Frankly, despite the more Alien focus of Pride's mission, I'm actually kinda hoping season 3 brings the show back around, and we learn the church does in fact worship giant gods named Gibborhim. If they show can do a little creative writing and get us in a place to enjoy that fun story from the comics, I think we're in for a treat. Of course they could just ignore that, and continue the focus on this alien invasion.

Oh, and possessed Tina was hilarious. This show is just too much fun. 5 out of 5. If only they released it weekly instead of all on one week. I really hate that so much.

Anyway, happy new year!

Geekly Weekly TV Rankings ( for new, 🎈👑🎈 for the winner, 🐍 for the loser):
  1. ➤Deadly Class ****1/2It was a fun show, really really dumb concept, and I'd hate to think someone could watch this show and take it seriously, but it was a lot of fun, and it was fun watching the teachers just ham it up with the evil, and the asian is super cute, as is the goth, and they're both allies for the main character, so I guess I'll keep watching. I'm so predictable.
  2. ➤Z Nation ***This one kinda bored me. I thankfully got through it, but even with a quiet period for TV, it was still a hard sit through. Maybe it's for the best it's been cancelled. I'll miss doc the most, but he had almost nothing to do the whole episode, besides light a joint. I think the best scene was the one between Murphy and the chick with the mask. That was great fun, and exactly the thing I love about taking beloved character that never interact, and making them interact. "You just love to hear yourself talk don't you." "Can I just, for a second, see what's under there?"
